***Festivals of Karaga***
Here is an effort to present the history behind the Karaga Shakthiotsava, which is tangled with the culture of Karnataka. This nine-days festival is an integral part of Bangalore, draws devotees from all walks of life from different parts of the Karnataka state. This website also attempts at narrating the history of the VANNIKULA KSHATRIYAS.
We are thankful for all the photograph and matter used in the site provided by The Secretary and Board of Director of Vannikula Kshatriya (Thigala) Veerakumarara Sanga.

Dwajarohana
The festival starts of with Dwajarohana, which means flag hoisting. The Yellow flag is hoisted inside the temple courtyard and then the celebration's start off. For the success of the festival the Ganacharis, Gantepoojaris,Veerakumara's and the karaga bearer tie Kankana (Sacred thread) on the flag pole and on themselves. From then on various celebrations like "Madivanthike", "Punya Snana", "Aarathi", "Pongalu Sevai", "Hasi Karaga", "Petai Karaga" and "Gauseve" take place.The flag is hoisted on a bamboo flag pole. The Thiglas of Jeraganahalli provide bamboo for the flagpole.

Madivanthike
This means cleanliness of spirit and surroundings.This part of celebration requires people (Vannikula Kshatriyas) to maintain their homes clean. They are supposed to cook in new Earthen Pots or vessels and eat on green leaves. These are applicable for the 9 days of the festival.It is believed that peace and happiness resides in the homes of people who follow these system. Incase these system are violated then trials and misfortune follow.

This means having holy bath.The Karaga bearer has to have holy bath in the selected wells or tanks. During the 9 days the Veerakumaras taking part in the festival have food only after the Mangala Aarathi in the temple.

Aarathi Utsava
The sixth day of the festival is Aarathi Utsava .
